DepositKit for Shopify

1. Install

Install DepositKit from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions. The app creates a hidden “Deposit” product that carries the deposit lines. It does not change your theme code.

2. Choose countries and amounts

Open Countries in the app. Turn on every country you sell drinks to and check the amount and VAT setting. Amounts are preset from our research; where VAT treatment is unclear the app asks you to choose, ideally after checking with your accountant. Countries whose scheme has not started yet (for example the United Kingdom and Greece) are listed but cannot be turned on until they start.

The deposit follows the country the customer selected in your store (the Shopify market), not the shipping address. Make sure the markets and currencies you sell in are enabled in Shopify.

3. Mark your drinks

Open Products. For each drink variant set the container (can, PET bottle, glass bottle), the volume and the number of units. A six-pack of cans has 6 units and gets six deposits. Drinks without this information get no deposit. You can assign many variants at once by collection, tag, product type or vendor.

4. Add the Deposit price block (required in most countries)

In most countries the deposit must be shown separately from the product price. Add the DepositKit price block to your product page:

1. In Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes → Customize.
2. Open the Product template and choose Add block under the price. Pick Apps → DepositKit price.
3. Choose the text size and click Save.

The block shows, for example, “+ €0.10 deposit” next to the price, and nothing for products without a deposit.

5. Checkout text

At checkout customers see the drink, for example “Lager Beer + €0.10 deposit”, and a separate Deposit line. You can change the wording in the app (Edit checkout text).

6. Run a health check

Open Health. It confirms that the deposit function, the Deposit product and the amounts are in place and warns about drinks without an amount, countries without currency set up in Markets, and similar problems. Use Repair when it offers one.

7. Place a test order

Open your store, add a drink for an enabled country, go to checkout and check that a separate Deposit line appears with the right amount. Try a multi-pack too.

Discounts

Deposit lines are normal order lines, so a “% off the whole order” discount also lowers the deposit. To keep the deposit unchanged, use discounts on products or collections, or exclude the Deposit product. This is your responsibility as the merchant.

Not supported

The deposit is added at online checkout. Point of sale and draft orders are not supported, so add the deposit by hand there. If another app also transforms cart lines (bundles, kits), check a test order.

Uninstalling

If you uninstall DepositKit, the hidden “Deposit” product stays in your catalogue. You can delete it after uninstalling. We delete your settings and access keys when you uninstall; see the privacy policy.
